Upon being confronting with the challenge to achieve an effective school bus air treatment system, it became quickly evident that we could not address such an existential threat with the tools and equipment that were currently available in the marketplace. To properly solve a problem, you first must understand the science of the situation. Let’s lay out some simple facts.

For Example:

  1. We know up to 90% of virus transmission is believed to occur via exhaled micro-droplets of water in the air, or otherwise known as exhaled aerosols. We also know that these can linger in the air for up to 10 minutes.

  2. We know that in order to adequately treat the airborne pathogens, we need to fully harness and take control of the air and direct it’s flow so as to eliminate vortex air movement that can spread pathogens throughout the cabin. We also know that we have to fully address and treat 100% of the air in the cabinet space.

Once facts like these have been fully vetted, “Deductive Reasoning can be applied to draw logical and sound conclusions. We can then begin to address the “best means and methods” to develop countermeasures that actually work. AirKleen capitalized on this method and developed a new and advanced U.S. Patented state-of-the-art air distribution system, High Volume Low Velocity (HVLT). This (HVLT) system provides the following counter measures.

  1. Forces the aerosols and contaminants to the floor.

  2. Maximizes the capture of the cabin air in order to return it to the APU for treatment.

  3. Maximizes treatment of the air via the proprietary “serpentine” air flow process within the APU, which, prolongs the exposure of the air to the UV-C light and maximizes the “DOSE”.

  4. Delivers fresh sterilized air back into the occupied space via an evenly pressurized perforated plenum that covers the entire ceiling of the cabin. (HVLT) provides a high volume of supply air, but via low turbulence that eliminates vortex air movement that can spread pathogens amongst the occupants.
